EFCC Sends Invitation to Ex-Militant Leader Tompolo Over Alleged Naira Abuse Amid Public Outcry

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has formally invited former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, in connection with allegations of naira abuse and financial misconduct, RNG247 reports. The invitation follows a surge of public outrage ignited by a viral video depicting Tompolo celebrating his 54th birthday in April.

Sources within the anti-graft agency revealed to RNG247 earlier this week that the letter was delivered and that the EFCC is now awaiting Tompolo’s response. While the agency clarified that the invitation is procedural and not an arrest warrant, officials emphasized their expectation of his cooperation in the ongoing investigation.

“An invitation letter has been sent to Tompolo,” one insider disclosed. “It’s part of standard procedure, and we are awaiting his response.”

The development comes on the heels of widespread criticism over the viral footage, which shows Tompolo dancing at a social event while another man sprays him bundles of ₦1,000 notes. The act, seen by many as a violation of Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, which prohibits the spraying or mutilation of naira notes in social settings, has sparked heated debates about adherence to financial laws and ethical conduct.

The law prescribes sanctions including fines, imprisonment, or both, for such acts, yet critics argue that enforcement has been inconsistent. The public outrage intensified after the video surfaced, with many Nigerians questioning why Tompolo, a prominent figure with substantial influence in the Niger Delta and a federal contractor responsible for securing oil pipelines, appeared to face no immediate repercussions.

In contrast, other celebrities and public figures such as Bobrisky, E-Money, Iyabo Ojo, and comedian AY have faced interrogation or prosecution for similar offences, prompting accusations of selective justice against Tompolo.

EFCC’s response was clear in a statement issued earlier this week, asserting that no individual is above the law. “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer,” the commission reaffirmed, though full details of the investigation remain undisclosed.

As the inquiry unfolds, Nigerians continue to debate the consistency and impartiality of law enforcement agencies in handling high-profile cases, especially involving influential personalities in the country's socio-political landscape.
